Australia Day 2010
13 January 2010
Don’t miss out on the big party to celebrate Australia Day in Sydney.
January 26th will see the nation’s favourite day of celebration burst into the streets of Sydney, with locals and tourists alike joining in the party.
Australian flags will be waving all over the city, with the heart of the festivities around the famous Sydney Harbour area. Organised events, food, wine, music, and fireworks will create a spectacle not to be missed in Australia’s most iconic city.
Boats and ships of all descriptions skim the waters of Sydney harbour joining in the Australia Day Regatta, in a festival of maritime prowess.
Parachutists from the Red Berets float down from the sky over Circular Quay and the huge outdoor barbeque taking place in Sydney’s Hyde Park a major part of the fun.
Music and dancing in the Rocks area of the city will go on throughout the day and evening, and of course, the firework spectacular out in Sydney Harbour ends the evening with a bang.
Australia Day is the celebration to remember the arrival of the first ships to arrive in Australia bringing as many as 1,350 people from England to establish a penal colony. After first landing in Botany Bay and finding it unsuitable for settlement, the colony moved on to Port Jackson on 26th January 1788. It’s a proud day for Australia and at noon, the Royal Australian Artillery discharges a 21 gun salute from Fleet Steps in The Domain. Australian Air Force planes give a spectacular display over Sydney Harbour.
Free Jazz and Rock concerts take place, parades of vintage cars, family entertainment and of course, there’s plenty of beer!
