New figures released for domestic flights within Australia
06 January 2010
Domestic flights across Australia play an important role in tourism both for domestic and international visitors. It is estimated that 16.2 million domestic tourists and travellers used internal flights as their main mode of transport. This figure represents 23 per cent of people making overnight domestic trips. During 2008, 24% of all international tourists visiting Australia used a domestic flight. A total of 66.4 million seats were available on domestic flights within Australia during 2008, and 78 per cent of these were sold. An increase in capacity of up to 3 per cent in domestic seat availability during 2008/09 may be offset by a cut of up to 4 per cent during 2009/2010 as the global recession bites into tourism expectations. Since the economic downturn, premium priced tickets have seen a downturn, although discounted tickets have sold well, with January 2009 seeing the lowest domestic priced tickets in the last 17 years.
