Simon Whitlock fails in World Title bid.
03 January 2010
Australian dart ace Simon Whitlock failed in his attempt to win the PDC World Darts Championship in last nights final against world number one Phil 'The Power' Taylor held at London's Alexandra Palace.
Whitlock came into the championships as an 80/1 outsider to win but after beating two of the worlds top three players in James Wade and Raymond Van Barneveld in the quarters and semis by playing some fantastic darts, he was always in with a chance of upsetting the odds and, although he ultimately succumbed to Taylor, the 7-3 scoreline does not truly reflect how close the match was.
Taylor took the first set before Australian Whitlock took the next two and the crowd were beginning to sense a possible upset. However 'The Power' then moved through the gears as he took the next four sets including one with a 167 checkout and another with a maximum 170 finish.
Whitlock, from Brisbane, Australia, kept up his fight to take the ninth set and make it 6-3 but it was only a matter of time before Taylor took his 15th World Crown and a cheque for two hundred thousand pounds.
