Smashing year for Adelaide Convention Centre
08 September 2008
Previous records have been smashed at the Adelaide Convention Centre (ACC) as figures newly released show visitor numbers during 2007 -08 have increased to 486,000, 27,000 of which entered South Australia purely to attend functions at the venue.
Turnover for 2007 -08 has increased to A$27.3 million from the previous years A$25.9 million.
Alec Gilbert Chief Exective of the Adelaide Convention Centre stated, “This is an outstanding result for the economy of South Australia with conferences and events held at the Centre during 2007-08 generating $71 million in economic benefits including 90,000 bed nights.”
Large business conventions held at the ACC included the Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy’s International Uranium Conference 2008 (400 delegates) and the Defence Industry Conference, (1600 delegates) which in the past has been held in the Australian capital, Canberra.
Other functions included Council of Australian Governments, the International Solar Cities Congress, Land Warfare Conference, International Salinity Forum and World Education Forum.
Mr Gilbert indicated the Convention Centre’s tactical spotlight on marketing and the launch of its new branding in 2007, had been extremely successful, sharpening its profile, and assisting to draw profitable, major domestic and international events.
“With limited budgets and competition from newer and larger centres both in Australia and overseas, future growth is challenging but we are committed to the Centre’s success and will continue to work harder and smarter than everyone else to achieve our goals,” he said.
“This year we have developed Go for Green conference packages that reduce and offset carbon emissions as well as installing a worm farm and reducing our landfill by 50 per cent. We also launched room décor packages designed to provide event planners with a cost and time efficient option for their gala dinners”
In 2007-08 the Adelaide Convention Centre showed a net profit of A$1 million of which, $785,000 was return for the South Australia government revenue.
